Abstract: In response to the question of how objects demonstrate their agency in interaction with humans, this article explores the various agencies of tape recorders in Ali Shariati’s life. Despite their stability, objects shift from an anthropocentric ontology to a flat ontology in different social contexts, thereby revealing their agencies. Investigating the agency of objects involves examining their impact on human life. Graham Harman is one of the philosophers who considered objects at the center of his ontological framework and chose object-oriented ontology instead of human superiority. This research introduces the concept of the flat ontology and outlines its differences from anthropocentric ontology. It discusses the features of object-oriented ontology from Harman's perspective and then considers the definition of the agency of objects in Harman's four-element model. This qualitative research uses descriptive and analytical methods, drawing on both written and electronic library resources, as well as field observations.  First, it examines the functions of the tape recorders according to magazine advertisements in the 1950s-1960s as foreseen tasks for objects in an anthropocentric ontology. Then, it considers the narratives of tape recorders in Ali Shariati’s house museum. Finally, it turns out that although advertisements depicted tape recorders as tools for entertainment or informal learning, in the context of social activities—particularly involving prominent figures such as Ali Shariati—they evolved into instruments of resistance in formal settings. These objects not only influenced the actions of activists but occasionally substituted for them, guiding or redirecting their efforts.
