The tilework decorations of the Maqsurah Iwan, the largest iwan of the Goharshad Mosque, encompass various decorative styles, including moqeli, moarraq, floral motifs, muqarnas, and under-dome ornamentation. These diverse and complex decorations are not only visual and artistic, so analyzing them can yield important results and messages. This study aims to achieve balance in visual complexity by analyzing the fractal geometry of both the hidden and apparent structures within the Maqsurah Iwan’s decorations, serving as a comprehensive representation of the entire mosque’s ornamentation. The research seeks to answer the central question: How can the balance in the visual complexity of the Maqsurah Iwan’s tilework decorations in Goharshad Mosque be analyzed based on fractal geometry?
This study is applied in nature and follows a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through library research and online sources. Fractal analysis was employed to assess the balance in the decorations, and Fractalys software was used to calculate the dimensions of the motifs and measure their complexity. In this process, the tilework patterns of the Maqsurah Iwan were first digitized using AutoCAD and then analyzed based on fractal geometry principles. Their fractal dimension was subsequently calculated using the box-counting method in Fractalys software.
The study concluded that the tilework patterns of the Maqsurah Iwan exhibit fractional dimensions that fully align with fractal dimensions. Furthermore, self-similarity and repetition were evident not only in the apparent geometry of the motifs but also in their hidden structures. This repetitive nature across different scales contributes to visual balance and harmony in the decorations, despite their complexity. The obtained fractal dimension values indicate that the arrangement of the decorations is structured in a way that ensures balance in their complexity. Thus, the application of fractal principles plays a crucial role in achieving both visual aesthetics and equilibrium in complexity and decoration harmony.
