The “Unveiling Decree” for Iranian women was an action taken by Reza Shah Pahlavi’s government in the year 1936. It was conducted in the context of modernising reforms and was inspired by Western culture. From the perspective of the government of the time, this event was aimed at facilitating women’s liberation; however, it perpetuated the political repression of women and the traditional patriarchal structures in Iranian society. These aspects render the unveiling event an interdisciplinary phenomenon, prompting diverse research in various branches of social sciences on the subject. Necessity and Importance of the current research lie in that it links the event of unveiling decree to its interdisciplinary discussions by studying a film and analyzing the process of its representation. The film under study, titled “Ghazal” is an Iranian cinematic production directed by Mojtaba Raie in 1996. Focusing on the memories of Ghazal, its eponymous character, from that period of history, the film depicts personal-social, and especially psychological damages inflicted on women during the unveiling process. These memories are recorded by Masoumeh, Ghazal’s daughter, in the form of a book, while she is simultaneously in conflict with her husband’s moral contradictions. This study is conducted using qualitative and descriptive-analytical methods, with a historical approach and has incorporated theories from the fields of women’s studies and “gender discourse.” The study raises the question of what perspective and methods the film employs to portray the repression of women and the monopoly of traditional patriarchy by the government of the time through the theme of “unveiling.” Furthermore, with the aim of evaluating the dimensions and the impact of this theme in the contemporary period of the film, the research utilizes a comparative approach to interpret the persistence of male hegemony and the subjugation of women from the perspective of the “tradition and modernity discourse.” In the end, the study concludes that the film strives to show that the devaluation of women’s gender, influenced by various male-dominated systems, is a fundamental and persistent phenomenon.
